Q: I don't like the mesh on the outside of this bag - is it removable?

The 22" size does not have the mesh pocket - the 18" size does, and it is detachable.

Q: how do i set up the lock? i threw away the package before realizing that there was a lock on it.

Using something thin, like a pencil tip or the end of a paperclip, push in the very small reset button on the side of the lock. The reset button is not labeled and very small and unnoticeable. Once the reset button clicks in place (you will hear it and notice the button is recessed into the housing), change the numbered combination dials to your desired 3 digit code. Finally, push the lock release button. The reset button will pop back into its normal place and your new combination will be set.

Q: Does the 22 in carry-on meet American airlines specifications?

Yes, it will. It is exactly 22"x14"x9" including the wheels.
