Q: I just bought 2 of these and realize something: what can this do that a bowl can't do? sure it's square but there are square ceramic bowls too so why?

1) It fits a standard block of ramen perfectly, meaning there is no excess water. That makes boiling faster, and the ability to use less seasoning. A larger bowl means using more water to cover the noodles, leading to longer boiling time. I have never seen a ceramic bowl that fits snugly around a ramen block. The closest thing is the plastic container Stouffer uses for its frozen lasagna, but those are meant for single use. Not sure if repeated microwaving would cause leeching2) There are side handles which remain cool, allowing easy handling.3) They're unbreakable and light.4) No measurements necessary. Just like Asian rice cooker, simply fill water to the line.If you eat lot of ramen, it's a convenience that may be worth the cost. For me, it's not because I tend to add ingredients (i.e. veggies) to my ramen, which needs a pot.

Q: Does this work with Shin Ramyun. It seems like it might not fit. Or does anyone have cooking directions for this?

Once it starts cooking it all goes in the bowl, sure it sticks out at first and you have to play with the water level but still works better than a regular bowl that definitely doesn't fit and doesn't have cool handles. I own three of them and eat all kinds of noodles from it. Buldak, Samyang carbo, shin, Ichiban, missing roah, top ramen. They all work great.

Q: I like the broth and it sounds like using only 1 cup of water won't give me much broth. Will this fit the normal two cups without overflowing?

The simple solution is to make the ramen in this using 1 cup of water and then empty into a bowl and add 1 cup cold or cool water. Use the normal amount of seasoning. An advantage to this method is that your ramen will be instantly cool enough to eat after adding the water.
