Jackson wrote, by himself, the first four singles from 1982’s Thriller, including YWBSS, Billie Jean and Beat it.On the Bad album from 1987, nine of the eleven tracks were again solely written by Jackson.And On both 1991’s Dangerous and 1995’s History he was the sole composer of some of the albums biggest hits such as Black or White and Earth Song.Yet, the 2001’s Invincible, only two of the 16 tracks are solely composed by Jackson.Perhaps it is a sign of his creativity slowing down, or more likely given his limited promotional efforts for the album, it is a sign that he wasn’t really invested in the album.Which is perhaps why this is such a disappointing album that was his first album for over six years ans the last in his lifetime.It is not without some highlights. The track ‘Butterflies’ (a big hit in the USA but unreleased in the rest of the world), displays Jackson’s stunning vocals.The albums lead single ‘You Rock My World’ is no classic , but still very credible and deserved to be a number 1 (it stalled at number 2 in the UK and number 10 in the USA probably as a result of a limited format release for the single).And, there re two absolute gems in ‘Whatever Happens’ which features Carlos Santana and the stunning ‘Speechless’ which is one of the two tracks penned solely by Jackson.Sadly, there are some rather weak offerings too, such as the turgid ‘Privacy’.But, on the whole, this is a credible if bloated album - removing four of the weaker tracks would have made this album so much more enjoyable.And as for the double picture disc vinyl reissue?It sounds fine.But the packaging is cheap with no gatefold sleeve, or any sleeve for that matter…just a plastic holder that soon erodes.It is , I suppose, needed for completion purposes only.
