Q: Can this be used to engrave serial numbers on metal objects? How deep can it engrave?

This tool has a vibrating (in-out) hard steel pointer with a cone shape. Hnad held. It pushes a few thousanths into the material and raises it above the surface a bit more. You needs to work on a good flat hard surface like a wood work bench top and hold it against he work piece tight while making the marks. Takes some practice to make good letters and numbers. I use it for round flat brass tags for identifying lock keys. Marks deeper on aluminum ; shallower on hardened steel or cast iron. Should work well on thick plastics or hardwood. Don't try it on glass or hard glazed ceramics that can shatter into small sharp pieces. Best to wear safety glasses if you are going to get your face within a foot or so of the work surface.
