Sunhome Smith Machine Home Gym – Great Value, but Some Design Quirks
The Smith Machine Home Gym is a well-rounded piece of equipment for those looking to build a versatile home gym on a budget. At $880 shipped with a coupon at the time of purchase (price subject to change), it offers a solid mix of features, including a Smith bar, cable system, leg press, and pull-up station. However, there are a few design flaws that require creative solutions.ProsThis machine provides a sturdy frame and a good variety of workout options for the price. It functions well for most exercises and, with the right modifications, can accommodate a full-body routine. When paired with an adjustable bench, such as the Fostoy Adjustable Weight Bench (approximately $120 at the time of purchase), it becomes even more versatile with the ability to perform leg extensions and leg curls, along with a preacher curl attachment.Cons & Workarounds1. Cable Length Limitation on Adjustable Pulleys• The cables bottom out too soon when using both pulleys at the same time, limiting the full range of motion. The seller confirmed this is a design flaw.• One solution is to use chain extensions (included with the machine) for each pulley and adjust your standing position until you achieve full range of motion. Another alternative is to sit on a bench or kneel to engage your core while performing movements like cable flys.• At 6’0”, I was able to make these adjustments work.2. Smith Machine Height Restriction for Calf Raises• The height of the machine prevents proper calf raises on the Smith bar.• There is no direct fix, but alternative options include using a hack squat machine like I bought on Amazon (MDeam is the brand, check out my review on that as well), or performing seated dumbbell calf raises on a small platform for better range of motion.3. Slack in the Pulley System for Leg Press, Chest Press, and Flys• The pulley system has noticeable slack, which reduces resistance at the start and end of movements.• To fix this, I placed a 2” piece of 2x4 between the rubber bumper of the leg press, which removed the slack and maintained consistent resistance throughout the range of motion.• Important Note: The block must be removed before adjusting weights, or it will be difficult to insert the pin into the stack.4. Pull-Up Bar Foam Grip Feels Cheap• The foam grip isn’t ideal for my preference. A bare metal bar with grip tape would have been a better design choice.5. Seat Back and Height Are Not Adjustable• The backrest is fixed, which means certain exercises require adjusting your body position manually.• The seat height is also non-adjustable, which may be an issue for some users, though it wasn’t a concern for me.Final ThoughtsThis Smith Machine Home Gym is a solid purchase for the price, with a wide range of functionality. While some design flaws exist, most can be worked around with slight modifications. If you’re looking for an affordable all-in-one home gym and are willing to make a few adjustments, this is a good investment—but keep in mind the price may change over time.

Worth every penny
Took about five hours to build with our little kids. Absolutely love it. Sturdy, easy assembly. The only cons I have is you can’t tighten the pulleys to much because you won’t be able to put the pin in the weight stack. And I did one workout and the seat gets easily stained.

Good unit n Company
Everything Awesome except shipping with FedX But the company shipped out missing box asap. All in all great unit , easy assembly ( just time consuming) and price point seems correct .

This year, my wife and I decided to start a focused fitness journey. However, going to the gym is not particularly ideal given our work schedules. So, we decided to look around for our own home gym. We looked at a number of different options before settling on this particular brand of Smith machine: SunHome. The machine itself was delivered in six separate boxes that were (luckily) all delivered the same day. From the outset, construction of the machine felt daunting. It took me somewhere between 5-6 hours to fully assemble it. The instructions were fairly easy to follow, although I would recommend that the manufacturer label the parts in the future to make finding the correct part a little easier. Other than that, everything assembled with ease. We did not encounter any misaligned holes or any thread issues. And the machine is very sturdy. This isn't cheap material. My forehead is well-aware.We were missing a few parts upon reaching final assembly. Fortunately, there was an email address in the instruction manual to contact for issues such as this. Their response was prompt, and not only did they ship me the replacement parts but sent extra just in case. All at no charge. So it's a little difficult to be upset about it. More customer service needs to be at that level, which is why I'll give this machine 5-stars.

Great Company!! Fantastic service
I give this gym 5 stars. A few of the parts were damaged upon arrival, but I contacted the company and they were extremely cooperative with assisting with sending replacement parts free of any additional charge. Fantastic company!!

Cheap. Not great quality.
I will give credit where credit is due. The machine was easy to put together and came with well written instructions. That’s about where my positive ends. Built cheaply. Will not work for my 6’4” husband other than bench press and light cable work. Cables can’t hold up to the full stack, pull up bar is unstable machine is tightened as much as possible with screws/bolts. Very unstable when he’s working out or trying to lift much weight on smith machine. He doesn’t fit in the peck fly area. The attachments are designed too close to the back plate. I am 5’7” 130 pounds and care barely comfortably fit. Better suited for smaller/shorter adults or for teenagers wanting to begin a fitness journey. Not well made for daily use.

Great system at a great price.
This is a great exercise system, it has so many different exercises that we can do on it. We have had it about three months now and so far no problems. I looked at so many different systems, including those at Costco, Sam’s Club, Walmart and Amazon and even Used systems and this was the best deal at the best price by far. It arrived in six or seven boxes over three days. It took six hours to put it together. I spent two hours a day over three days by myself for the most part. I did need my wife’s help for about 15 minutes for one part. Helpful Notes: the parts for each step including the first step are spread out over all the boxes. You will need to closely follow the instructions, which are not that good. You will need a large space with least three feet in front of the leg press. I was able to get a good bench and weights separately. I would definitely recommend this system.
