Hardware design is very good, but software and configuration options are limited and poorly implemented
First the bad, then the good. You would expect for an endpoint like this to include a webserver for configuration, but it does not have one. You MUST have their CD that is included with the product to install their configuration tool on a host computer system. Their software requires that you also install Apple's Bonjour networking discovery tool, and herein lies the problem. If you 1600-IP series device is not on the same layer 2 ethernet network, you have absolutely no way to reach or configure the device. We leverage VLANs on all of our customer's VoIP networks so that we can implement QoS tagging correctly, therefore, we only have endpoints on the VLANs where we expect to find devices like this. We do not have any PCs on the same layer 2 networks where our endpoints exist, so Viking Electronics must not have thought about this, since it is a very common scenario in 2015 to find that many endpoints are in fact configured remotely from a centralized and secure environment. Now, I have to drive to the customer site and plug in a laptop, enable an access port for the same VLAN where this IP-1600 device will be installed, install the software (including Bonjour) again, and configure the device. When I leave the site, if the customer wants to make any changes, I have to drive back to the site and repeat.Viking Electronics development engineers are living in the 1990s if you think that a $700+ list price VoIP enabled device is going to survive without an embedding web-server, tftp, http, or https configuration support, or at least a install-able configuration tool that does not allow the user to input an IP address range to scan for devices, etc.The good is that the unit itself is physically well designed, and I ordered the weather proof version, which appears to have been very well designed and built. In summary, the software design team is dated in their skills and approach and the development team manager needs to reach out and hire a new systems architect who has the experience and vision to at least bring the software side of this product up to par with any other VoIP enabled endpoint on the market.
