how thick are th espikes?

More than thick enough. If you are concerned about the thickness of the spikes, they are pretty substantial.

This is pulling the ground up when I back it out, does that happen to anyone else?

Yes. If your soil is loose and wet. For bald spots, I put down seed and fertilizer and then use this Aerator to “chop” up the ground and really sew those seeds. I like this a lot. It works best as an aerator on ground with good grass root systems already in place.
