Consistent and Perfect for Sgraffito Work
I absolutely love this underglaze. I mainly use it for sgraffito, and it’s been incredibly dependable. I apply 3 coats onto greenware and the coverage is always smooth and even. I always get a rich, deep black that contrasts beautifully with the clay body. This is a solid, high-quality underglaze that does exactly what it promises. It’s become a staple in my studio, and I’ll definitely be reordering. Highly recommend!

Favorite underglaze company
Amaco's velvet black underglaze should be a staple in everybody's pottery studio. Black makes everything pop and adds character to my pieces when I paint it on a bisque piece and wipe it off leaving it just in the crevices.

Great coverage and color
With three coats, this underglaze provides solid coverage. I like the Amaco Underglazes because I can control the color and easily apply small details. Without a clear glaze over it, it will fire to an almost suede look like the first picture. With glaze, it looks like the second photo.

LOVE this color
Color looks amazing! It is a very dark and true black. I fire to cone 6 and did not clear over the black and it looks great. Highly recommended and I'll be buying more.

Stays black! Going to cone 6 under MATTE clear.
I use this underglaze for sgraffito decoration on functional and sculptural ceramics. I paint 2 coats onto greenware, carve my sgraffito design, and after bisquing, fire it to cone 6 underneath a MATTE clear glaze. My matte glaze (using G1214Z Matte Clear) does not always get along with other underglazes (See: Amaco Velour Black.) It likes to turn them pastel or make them bleed. This underglaze gets along with my matte glaze, and so it is my staple around the studio. It stays solid and black, just like it is supposed to.The coverage with 2 coats can still show some brushstrokes under a GLOSSY clear, however. So if you need FULL, SOLID coverage maybe put more coats or go with Amaco LUG series Black.
