Q: Can it shorten? And how would I fit the ends onto a wall?

Yes you can shorten it to get the desired length. I used a haxsaw. I fixed the two main brackets to the Wooden studs behind plasterboards (located using magnets) and then the two end brackets are screwed into the side walls as extra support. The end brackets should be placed onto the pole ensuring the are facing correct way ( I made that mistake!) before the two main brackets are fixed to the wall. Once main brackets are screwed into place you slide the end brackets to end of pole and mark the screw holes and screw into then the side walls. Hope this helps.
