What is the fat, flat o-ring for? Not the seal and not the thin o-ring.

if you are talking about the square O-ring approx. 2-1/4" id x 3" od -- it goes between the ceramic bowl and the plastic housing with the motor and maserator. there are 4 bolts holding the two together. if you do not take apart you do not need to use it.

This is the second kit i've purchased for my two jabsco model 37275-1092 toilets. the o-ring is slightly too large for the seal housing. what's up?

Yes! It's total bs! I had to steal an o-ring out of a different kit that I fortunately had as a spare. The kit with the one that worked was a different part number and didn't include the duckbill. Unfortunately I have 2 other kits with the oversized o-rings and that's probably the most common thing to go bad. There was some foul language used that day.
