Staunton No. 6 Tournament Chess Pieces w/ Wood Box

Very happy with these! Full disclosure, they are not perfect. A little bit rough in places but I like them. Slightly weighted, which is nice, good felt base, nice colouring, nice woodwork.Yes, the cross on the king isn’t perfectly straight, yes the knights are a bit rough but if you wanted perfect knights I think you’d buy a different set.All in all, these are lovely pieces to play with. The bishop is a good, classic shape, the rook has proper crenellations so it can be inverted if needed, and there are some extra little details which are just quite nice.Also, the pieces fit easily in the box without having to be a Tetris expect!I think ultimately what you choose is down to personal preference, but what you see is what you get with these and they are genuinely lovely to play with!

This is pretty much the classic 'modern' set, with German knights, used in all modern chess tournaments. It is not my favourite style of set in general, but it has a very specific purpose-it is a utilitarian set, made for quick & easy pattern recognition in the traditional 'Staunton' style, and for throwing around and playing with in all circumstances & weathers, whilst also meeting all official match regulation standards. I don't think it is a set that one can really visually admire, but it is a real everyday 'worker' set, and this 'German knight' style has evolved to become universal and omnipresent for a reason. From that perspective, I think Wegiel make the best set of this particular 'type' now available for the money anywhere. I love the fact that pieces come with an already weathered look, that the black pieces aren't totally black, and that the texture and grain of the hornbeam offers something distinctly'different' (and to my fingers more grippy) than the more normal boxwood. I appreciate the Polish origin as well, when so much is normally made in China or India. The weight to me is also just right-these are pieces to fly over the board in 5-15 minutes if required, not to clunk around. Your heart would also not leap into your mouth if you dropped one of them. This is not a set that screams distinctiveness (though I think the Wegiel queen is really quite attractive and distinctive) or one that you necessarily visually fall in love with, but one can nonetheless still admire the absolute simplicity and unity of function & purpose.

My family really liked these well made wooden chess pieces. They have a brilliant size and a good weight and finish. They also really like the box! I recommend it.

Absolutely gorgeous chess set. I ordered these for my Husbands 48th birthday. I am really impressed. Each piece is well carved and nicely finished and feels lovely to play with. The wooden box makes the chess set feel that bit more special.

Bought these for my mum for Christmas as she has taken an interest in chess. I struggled to find anything that had a nice quality but wasn't pushing £100. So i took a chance on these and there honestly really nice and my mum was thrilled with them.

The chess pieces received were in line with my expectations, and the king was at least the height declared which I measured at 100 mm but this slight increase may be to the addition of the felt base pad. More importantly, the base diameters of the pieces are such as to enable their easy use on a board with 50 mm squares. The attractive wooden box provides an appropriate and effective means of storage.
