Essential Tailgate Lock for Added Security
Being a DIY enthusiast, I was eager to enhance the security of my truck, and the McGard 76029 Tailgate Lock did not disappoint. Installing it was straightforward, even for someone like me who prefers to handle projects on their own.The lock fits perfectly on my truck, and the black finish blends seamlessly with the tailgate, maintaining the aesthetic appeal. One thing I particularly liked is the sturdy construction, which gives a sense of durability and reliability. It’s clear that this lock is built to withstand the elements and potential tampering.Using the lock has provided me with peace of mind. I no longer worry about the tailgate being stolen, especially when parking in unfamiliar areas. The lock mechanism is smooth, and I haven’t encountered any issues with jamming or difficulty in turning the key.One aspect I wasn’t too fond of is the initial stiffness of the lock. It took a bit of effort to get it moving smoothly, but after a few uses, it loosened up and now works flawlessly. Additionally, while the instructions were clear, a visual guide or video tutorial would have made the installation process even more foolproof. In essence, this tailgate lock has become an invaluable addition to my truck. It’s a simple yet effective solution for preventing theft, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to secure their vehicle’s tailgate without compromising on style or functionality.

Peace of mind
Easy to install and provides a little peace of mind. A friend had his tailgate stolen on a military installation. If nothing else maybe this will frustrate the thief enough that they will move on to an easier target.

Feels cheap and flimsy, but it works well
I was surprised at the flimsy appearance of the product when I first opened the package. The design and modifications made to a simple worm geared hose clamp are simple but effective. Installation was easy if you read the instructions, and removal will be difficult without the special secret key.I would buy again.

Fits 2016 Ford F150 XLT Supercrew Short Bed BUT.....................Read the review!
I hate posting negative reviews. I really do because I realize that not having certain skills is on the customer, not the manufacturer. But I am so tired of buying cheap products at a high price and the manufacturer cannot even take the time to describe the item properly. So..........The best thing I can say about this is it fits my 2016 F150 XLT short bed. The worst......a whole bunch. I bought this lock to replace a ratcheting clamp ring installed by the dealer to deter theft. Which, basically, is all this is with a plastic cover and lock. Be aware......this is not exactly a plug and play install on this model truck. The first thing I see in the directions is that you have to remove one side of the tailgate for my Ford. Really? Not in any McGard videos I watched you didn't. But sure enough that is clearly listed in the directions for Ford and you can see there is no way to get the inner plastic cover on if you do not remove the tailgate. Now I am not a functional idiot. But neither am I on Street Outlaws or a working auto mechanic. Unhooking a tailgate may be easy for some folks but it is a chore for me. At 62 I am on my 5th truck and never have I unhooked one yet. So, OK. First time for everything, right? The directions tell me to check the manual on tailgate removal. I look in the manual, figuring I will read the directions and wait until I have an extra set of hands to lift it off. The thought of removing a tailgate by myself on a new truck with less than 500 miles was not exactly appealing to me although, once again, nowhere do you see that two people may be necessary for installation. So I start reading and it only gets better. Because I have a back-up camera in the tailgate you need to unhook wires and whatever going to the camera. I stopped right there. That's all I need is to start screwing around with the back-up camera wiring. And then if I have a legitimate problem, not caused by me, the dealer will refuse to repair under warranty if they can verify that something was "tampered" with. Been there, done that.At this point I was about to send it back but I had already spent a couple of hours reading and looking for the right tool to tighten the lock which was a chore in itself. Allen wrenches did not seem to work, God Forbid. I had to use a ratchet wrench extension since I did not have any 1/4 inch square head screwdrivers handy. Unreal! What would you even use those for?So I placed duct tape around the tailgate hook to avoid scratching the paint and just screwed the lock on. Now, without the correct protective plastic cover the lock fits over, I have no idea if it will work and/or start corroding. What I do not understand is this. Type is cheap. Would it be that freaking difficult to state that some vehicles may require tailgate removal, unhooking wiring, needs two people, whatever, in the description? Because I would have never, ever, spent 20 bucks on this had I known as much.I installed a prop lock on my Merc 40 Bigfoot. May have been a McGard product too as well as I can remember. Took me 15 minutes and all I needed was a torque wrench which I did read in the description and purchased before install. But this.......wow! And honestly........I bet a crook could remove the lock as quickly as the cheap ring the dealer used.Very disappointing to say the least.
