Q: Is there a particular reason this is made from carbon steel instead of stainless? Won't this axe rust once the powder coat wears off?

Carbon steels tend to be tougher and easier to sharpen. Even stainless steels rust, it just takes more for them to do so. You will need to properly care for the axe either way so they use a steel that can take the beating far better. Outdoors tools aren't meant to just sit somewhere for a year. A light coat of mineral oil every so often will be fine. Or you can just give it a patina once the coating wears.

Q: Is the head wide enough for splitting or narrow for chopping?

It's a short axe, useful for felling small trees for firewood or building an emergency shelter.; however axes can also split wood. The wedge of a hatchet is wider, which is why they're better for splitting wood, and lousy at felling trees for firewood or building shelters. Even though I grew up shooting and hunting, raising livestock, using knives and axes, I never used a hatchet until in my 40s. Then I bought an Eastwing short axe, and enjoyed the increased functionality.

Q: Had anyone used this axe for throwing? Like axe throwing for sport

Not by any means an experienced axe thrower by any means. But there is a local, indoor, axe throwing experience place that uses these EXACT axes as the base model. They let you pay an extra $5 for a different selection of axes. But as far as throwing these go, I was able to pick it up fairly quickly using this axe (well balanced). There are for sure better axes to use for competitive axe throwing that don't have bouncy rubber parts.

Q: Does the axe ship having already been sharpened or will I need to sharpen it when it arrives?

Came sharp enough to split small logs (12-16 inch) without much effort. I personally sharpened it to shaving sharpness and it's a nice, practical piece to show off.
