Q: Not sure of my size on columbia clothing but usually xs on tops. is is true to size? should i stick to xs?

I felt like a sausage in a casing. I had to go bigger but I am not a skinny person.

Q: Does this need to be worn next to skin to be effective?

In theory yes. It has a shiny interior lining to activate the cool down or heat. For the cold it helps, it’s like having a long sleeve and a thin jacket on. So if you use it as a base layer to bundle up it helps. I haven’t noticed to much of the cooling effect. When It’s hot out, it seems to help a little bit. But, if I wore it over another T-shirt I don’t think it would be as effective.

Q: Is this true to size?

Yes this was true to size for me. It was just loose enough to be comfortable and still reflect the heat to keep warm.
