Great toy
My two year old loves this whistle. Other reviews noted that it takes some force to get it to work, and it's a bit muted. I appreciate that the kiddo can "play music" and it isn't terribly loud and obnoxious. It's still going strong six months later.

works well for my 18 month old
Got this as a stocking stuffer for my son...he was able to make it work with the first blow. He doesn't work the adjuster while he blows -he is very short winded... but he loves sliding the adjuster back and forth when he isn't playing it. The only thing I don't like about this wwhistle is when the rod is completely extended, the whistle sound diminishes and you just hear air rushing through a gap too large. Its a great first whistle, no paint to wear off, simple and functional for a small child.

It's fine.
my father in law sent my 3 year old an amazon giftcard. after looking at many many mannny things on here he decided on this whistle and a stuffed cat. For the price and our intended purpose (entertaining a little kid) this whistle is great. Not too loud, pretty sturdy. If you wanted this whistle to actually play musically, I wouldn't recommend it. But as a toy it's just fine.

Fun, unique whistle!
When my kids asked for a "slide whistle", I had no idea what it was. Luckily, Santa knew what one was and pointed me to the internet... As it turns out, the sudden desire for a slide whistle stems from a SpongeBob episode... So with that in mind, I was none too thrilled to have to track it down for Christmas! I did, though, and tucked it into the kid's stockings. Imagine my surprise when the kids have spent about 5.5 hours so far running around the house playing with their little slide whistle! First of all, it is not the loud, shrill sound of a typical whistle (think sports games -- NOT like that). It has a nice, harmonious sound. While the kids can make a loud blow into it and thus increase the volume, that seems to take a lot of effort and does not happen too often. I am pleasantly surprised how, in this high-tech era, the kids have gotten so much enjoyment out of a non-electronic device! Thank you SpongeBob for the slide whistle idea!

Sounds of nature??
It keeps a young child entertained for a while, but it has less range than some others out there. The sounds are somewhat mute and it takes a good amount of air to get good sound. It's a decent toy for the price, but if you want your child to appreciate sound and tone more, I think a penny whistle would be a better way to go.Just looking for a fun way to introduce musical sounds to a 3-5 year old at an affordable price? This may be for you.

Perfect for the small, precocious human
No one is recreating Mozart on this thing, but it is sturdy, easy to use, and perfect for small moderately-dexterous people who love to hear and make "schoooop" sounds. Have you no heart? Buy this for them!

Nostalgic and simple
The whistle makes a good sound and is more fun than the normal metal ones. My kids got them as gifts and really enjoy them.

Terrible, do not buy
I'm sorry to have to write a negative review, but this slide whistle is TERRIBLE -- It's difficult to slide, the slider wobbles, and the lower end does not produce any notes at all. It's definitely good quality wood, but terrible design and construction. I would recommend a plastic slide whistle for a few dollars more - I played one a few years ago, and it worked perfectly. I can't find where I put it now, so I may just buy a new one.
