Q: How thick is the wire?

The wire is about 1.5mm thick. It is plenty strong enough to hang a heavy painting but it is very difficult to work with. It does not twist together so you have to either use clamps to hold the ends or form a knot. It comes with some clamps but not enough.

Q: where does one get extra sleeves?

I've been looking on Amazon for the identical sleeves as in this kit with a single round hole. I only find ones shaped like an eight, but I think they will work.

Q: What is the weight limit of the wire?

In the verbage description of the item it states it holds up to 30#'s.

Q: can you paint it? I want to use it to support speakers and it will be exposed

You can paint the components of the kit as they are steel. I have not done this but painting steel is not difficult.
