Q: Do you get two baskets for the 20$ or is it two pieces that makes one basket for 20$?

I received two baskets, each basket has two pieces - the sides and the bottom insert.

Q: Are these sturdy enough to stack on their sides and use as shelves?

It depends on how heavy the items you'll be placing on the "shelves" are. They are very sturdy but they would bow some under too much weight. Also, because they are a chunky woven grass, they might not be really square and therefore not ideal for stacking.

Q: Has anyone spray painted these? I need peach or blue for a bathroom

They're pretty porous, not sure it'd age well, especially in a humid environment. At least for me the appeal of these was the natural fiber anyway. If you want colors/spray paint I'd go for reed/wicker or even woven plastic rather than paying more for the natural water hyacinth. Seems a waste.
