Q: What is the square pad that comes in the box and what do i do with it?

The sauare pad is anti-scale cotton, which can slow down the accumulation of scale on the heating sheet. Excessive scale will affect the heating efficiency. It is recommended to clean it every 3-6 months, mainly depending on the water quality. Frequent cleaning is recommended if the water quality is too bad. At the same time, please pay attention to the strength of cleaning, do not wash it bad. Moreover, it should be placed on a heating plate.

Q: What is the difference between uc5501 humidifiers and sh8820 humidifiers?

Elechomes SH8820 Ultrasonic Top Fill Humidifier can add water from the top of the tank, the screen can be turned off at any time, and the child lock function has been added.

Q: Anybody else got the problem where no mist comes out after refilling? Only solution seems to be dumping all the remaining water out first.

Twice now Ive had this issue after using the heated mist option. Dumping the water fixes it. trying to see if there is some correlation to the heat setting, and if I should try exchanging it.

That's difficult to say, depending upon what humidity you set your unit at and the type of heating in your house, as well as the ambient humidity outside. Having said all that, I don't use distilled water, I purchased that filter that plugs in the bottom of the unit, it's on Amazon and I fill my two units up with regular tap water and never had a problem with white dust on anything.
