Has anyone used these on cast iron? Any reason I should be worried about it?

Yes! Excellent on cast iron, glass, stove top, stainless steel. I believe, possibly, they are imbedded with silica. I give them as gifts. Everyone raves about them.

What are these made of? Looks like just terry cloth

It's not terry cloth. It might be nylon. It's hard, "scrubby" and it dries quickly.

Are these biodegradable/compostable?

The scrub is not compostable as it has a non-toxic resin hardener on it. It is however Eco friendly due to the longevity and the base material that it is made from. They use the thread leftovers ( which would ordinarily be thrown away) from the towel industry to make them. Hope this helps.

Can these be used to clean a ceramic stove top?

You can clean glass or ceramic with it, but BE GENTLE. If you scrub hard you can leave scratches on a metal cookie sheet. But if you use it with a light hand it won't scratch your stove.
