Q: How does one change the battery

The front of the case next to the display is actually a slide off plate. Put your thumb on the surface and slide it away from the display to open the battery compartment. Replace the battery and slide the plate back on.

Q: Does it include a base attachment for using when measuring "depth"?

Not included. You can measure depth with this caliper, but the Starrett PT22431 attachment (currently $87.80 on Amazon) stabilizes the base and facilitates a more accurate measurement.
