Q: Might be a silly question, which side is the top of the rail?

I fitted mine on a t5 as picture and drilled holes to line up with existing bolts in roof. Works great with a drive away kit. To be honest it would be better in one length instead of 3 x l metre lengths. Hope this helps

Q: Is there anyway to fit it directly to a van roof ?

You drill the holes where you want them I used mine on a transporter and lined mine up to match existing but would be better in 1 length of 250 cm tbh
