Q: Do you need the wall straps to keep it from falling?

Yes. Fully loaded, it twists and shifts even strapped. I actually bought metal plumbing pipe straps and secured it to the wall which works great.

Q: Does this model have dividers?

It comes with 12 dividers, not what I would call an ample supply.

Q: For paperback book users, do the metal racks damage the underside of the book over time?

No. But, the unit doesn't have enough cross bars to hold a standard American paperback book. (I know) Only front and back bars are there. And the front bar is placed too far to hold the front of the book. I used shelf liners. But, great product aside from that.

Q: Atlantic Maxsteel 3020 432 CD/228 DVD/114 VHS/ 8-Tier Media Rack Black: Are the shelves strong enough to support books?

I wouldn't put many (and just at the bottom. They would have to be the small books as well - DVD size. I love these shelves for my movies. They hold 50-55 (average) DVD / BluRays. I hope this helps.
