How long do you need or should leave wine in a decanter before drinking it?

Decanters are for Red Wine. Some red wines have a heavy concentrate of "tannins' in them. Tannins come from grape skins and are a natural preservative, but taste bitter. Many more full bodied wines like Italian barolo or French bordeaux have lots of tannin in them and so need to be aged as the tannins will dissipate over time. That is why people age red wines. When you open a wine with lots of tannins in it, it will taste bitter if you drink it immediately. But if you expose it to air in a clean glass container--a decanter--the tannins will dissipate--the wine will taste less tannic--and so it removes the bitter flavor that comes from the tannins. There is not right amount of time to decant, it depends on the amount of tannins. With less tannic reds, an hour is good, with more heavy tannic wines, two hours, and if you got lots of money and purchased a $150 barolo or bordeaux then probably up to 4 hours is good and if you have such a bottle, then you must invite me over to consume it!! But again there is no absolute time. So get a decanter, go to a wine shop and ask one of the people working there to pick you out some wines that need to be decanted and experiment. It will be fun, trust me! Once a wine has been decanted and then exposed to air and tastes good, any further prolonged exposure to air actually is bad for it, it becomes flat and loses its body/fruit and its balance between fruit and acid. So if you open a bottle and are only gonna have a single glass after it's been decanted, then you actually should get a little kit to take air out of the bottle. But you can always just drink the wine! Hope taht helps. And go to a wine shop and ask questions of the help. Seriously, they actually like that and love to talk about wine and educate people on it. Hi Bill,The decanter easily holds a standard 750 ml bottle of wine. The product description indicates the "size" is 1,800 ml = 7.60 cups.(The decanter is large)

Does anyone know if these are dishwasher safe?

The Le Chateau wine decanter is dishwasher safe but we recommend hand washing it. It should be cleaned with dish soap and warm water then left to dry upside down on a drying rack.
