Q: How do these things alert you? Is it a loud audible alarm built into the unit? How loud is it? And how long does the alert last? Batteries?

By itself, this motion sensor does not alert you. It simply detects motion and reports it to a DSC security panel. The unit is wireless and the battery can last up to 3 years and sometimes a little longer. There is no siren built into this motion sensor. If you have a DSC security system, you cannot just place this on the wall, it has to be enrolled into the security system. I hope this helps.
