Super Industrial Strength Small Rotary Tool Handset
After trying four other supposedly powerful "manicure type machines", to help me with the lighter duty tasks to make small metal tool tips to sell, they all failed to stand up to regular use over time. The Proxxon tool is the first one that easily does the work I need with no overheating or bogging down. This heavy-duty handset has plenty of power with the Proxxon 38704 Heavy Duty Transformer. I use this along with the Proxxon 38700 Foot Switch, which makes controlling the speed of the handset even easier. It takes longer to change out a rotary bit than it did with the pull-out-push-in style collet of the other machines. The push button lock is hard to hold down for small hands like mine, but the collet has a surer more heavy duty grip. The overall size of the handset is larger diameter and length than the other machines and is a bit harder to control. But the power of the set up and the dependability of the Proxxon name more than makes up for it.I thought I would save money by buying a cheaper machine, then had to replace it more than once. I guess I got what I paid for. The power of this set up and the dependability of the Proxxon name more than makes up for the modest price difference, after getting a great deal on Amazon. I think this will be the last small rotary machine I will need to buy for my business.Shirley K. JohnsonSkulpTools Studio

Convenient, lightweight
I have lots of similar rotary tools from standard/real Dremels to a bunch of alternate brands. This Proxxon compares favorably for the overall convenience but seems a little overpriced for the specs.Good things: I really like that I can use the same power supply for multiple tools. I never realized how much of a pain it is to have four or five power cords strangling an outlet. I bought a four connector supply (purchased separately) and am using three devices (sander, two rotary tools). The tool itself is lightweight and easy to hold. It almost half the size of a comparably priced Dremel or a lower priced 3rd party clone tool. This makes a big difference after an hour or so. The spiral cable does a good job of staying out of the way. I think not having the transformer built into the tool also saves a fair amount of weight. Speed of the drill was consistent and didn't have that wavelike hum that I get from the cheaper tools. It doesn't matter terribly for the things I'm doing but I expect it would be important for real craftsmen.Main downside is that, yes, you need to purchase the power supply separately. I didn't notice this at first so had to wait another week before the PS arrived. Also, it's not cheap. I do have flex shaft attachments for my Dremels which, though not quite as lightweight as this Proxxon, would probably suffice for many users.

Well made, quiet, professional quality, tad big and long for modelmaking, but the only real option
Used for making models. I used a Weecher for years. It was light as a pencil but kept breaking. I'd disassemble it, rewire or solder, bypass the switch, etc. Finally died. This is the best replacement I could find. I've used it for about 10 hours. It's solid and dependable, very well made, professional quality, and sealed so it won't fill with clogging dust. The transformer is like a brick, but that's good because it stays put, doesn't skid around. The curly cord is plenty long and no trouble. The drill is well-balanced, weighs about as much as a small crescent wrench, with the weight in the middle, but a tad heavy. It's long, too. Compare to that 5" action figure. You can't "cramp up" on the nose because of the tail weight, but maybe just as well. I kind of lay it across my (big) hand and work lightly. Not sure a woman could use it for long or accurately. The hand chuck is a marvel, fast and simple, and holds any Dremel bit. It's quiet. Pricey, but it'll probably outlive me. You turn it on by spinning the drill. The minimum speed is wicked fast, so fine. Dial is safer because you're unlikely to bump it on while changing chucks. Comes with some bits (subset of what's in the pic) and many chucks, and a cool green case you'll probably never use. Weechers are too flimsy and a Dremel is too big and unwieldy for models, so Proxxon looks like the only way to go. HD sells a "Model Building and Engraving Set" with the drill, transformer, bits, collets, and case for $95. Note you NEED the transfomer.

Quality handy tool.
Pros: handy, supplied with a set of well-centered steel collets instead of unbalanced chuck that goes with the next model.Cons: have not experienced any so far.

Gourd Carrver Wanna BE
I am carving gourds. It is just fine. Cheap ones vibrate so badly, one might drill a hole in themselves.A Newby in the Gourd World
