Q: This product says HD speakers. How good is the sound vs the cheaper walker muffs?

The speakers are great. You hear every sound clearly. The only other electronic muff i can compare are 20 yr old Dillion ear muffs.

Q: Is there a noticeable difference in the sound volume when you turn on or off the control knob? Right now I can’t tell any difference.

Yes there is. The purpose of the volume knobs is to raise ambient noise up to hear people talk but the sound compressor will blunt loud noises such as gunfire. They do not work well when running a chainsaw or lawnmower. Turn them off for that activity.

Q: Are there any aftermarket gel ear pads available for these? i have a set i use as a loaner for guests but they are quite uncomfortable for me.

Didn't buy these to enhance sound but to suppress it. These muffs essentially kill the report from a shotgun which is important to my hearing because I shoot skeet and sporting clays. The unique feature is that you can adjust the electronics to hear normal speech louder or softer while still suppressing the report. How much louder I can't say. I understand there are Walkers that do nothing but enhance hearing which might be useful in a hunting situation.
