Q: I know that it is 1 inch wide, How thick is this belt?

My manual mm gauge reads 1 1/4 mm. The straps appear to be very well made and strong.

Q: Is the total of all four straps equal 78 inches? Can I use this to extend a dog back seat car cover which is too short?

I don't have the straps with me but I believe that each strap is 74 inches. They were used on the largest suitcases possible to ship overseas. I hope this helps.

Q: What is the shortest length you can make it?

The length of the buckle, which is about an inch and a half, plus a tiny loop of strap on each end which you would sew. One side of the buckle is already a sewn stationary connection to the buckle. The other end is meant to loop around and be adjustable. If you use it that way you could pull it completely tight and you could tighten it around an object two inches in diameter. You can make it a looped strap or a strap that is attached at two points to an article made of fabric for instance.
