What is the table made of? Wood or plastic? What is the approximate weight? Thank you!

It works well as a portable table tennis surface. The ball reacts a litle differently than on a regular table however it can be set up most anywhere. I am a middle aged person and find it a little heavy to carry but definitely doable. My guess is that it weighs approx 20-24 lbs. The good thing about it being heavy is that it doesn't move around and is sturdy even on a small table. I would recommend being careful to put a cloth down first if you are placing it on a nice table as it has sharp edges which can scratch the table underneath when unfolding it. I don't use the vice grip net that comes with it, but a spring loaded extendable net that was purchassed at Sports Authority for under $5 because sometimes I am laying it on a billiard table and it is not possible to grab onto the table with a little vice. It's not like a real table but it is portable and has come in handy.

Can you use this to convert an 8ft pool table to a dining table?

It probably wouldn't work particularly well as a dining table, because there are hinges on each side and the table might buckle somewhat under pressure. You really can't sit on it, for instance. Still, it could work if you were careful. You could put a piece of plywood underneath to give more support.

Will this work to lay over an air hockey table where the middle of the board is not touching anything just the outer edge?

Yes, I have mine over the 2 n 1 Fat Cat Pockey Table (air hockey & pool).

What is the bottom surface made of? Is there foam to prevent scratching of a dinning table?

No foam. It is all painted particle board but the paint is smooth. This is a 2 sided game board. one side is for table tennis, the other has a checker board and back gammon board. It comes with all the pieces to play all the games. We use a poly folding table to put ours on, if that helps. if all you have is a dining table, I would buy some felt or something like that to protect your table.
