Spray diligently until the cats avoid the area
I purchased a couch in December and moved to our new place in January. I had been religiously spraying this 3x/day for 3 weeks and our cat who was starting to scratch these areas a lot seems to not do it anymore. You just have to be really diligent about doing it.
