What should I do when the batteries catch on fire while charging? The batteries started smoking and got extremely hot.

This is not an issue I’ve experienced. After unplugging and moving charger/batteries to non flammable well ventilated area & call your local fire dept. As an aside, I now use Pale Blue brand rechargeable Li batteries as I feel they are of higher quality and have not experienced over heating. What you are experiencing is a failure of the built in battery safety circuit that is supposed to prevent just this from happening. It is my understanding that ALL li ion batteries are made with this safety feature from Tesla power walls to AAA batteries.
