it CAN NOT ship by air. Make friends with a scientist and ask if you can get some gram's stains and other stains from them. Its soo much easier.

can this be used on live cells

This stain is used to stain a specimen collected on a sterile swab and smeared on a glass microscope slide. The specimen can be collected from a bacteria colony on agar, or directly from a body site, like a sore or surgical site, with a swab. The specimen is then taken to the lab and transfered to a glass microscope slide, from the swab, with a rolling motion. Bacteria are alive ( and infectious) at this point. The slide is allowed to air dry before passing it quickly over a flame ( of a bunsen burner back in the day) or can be rinsed with methanol or ethanol to to 'fix' the bacterial cells onto the slide, so they won't wash off during staining. At this point, the bacteria are dead. You can now go through the staining procedure with the stain and rinse steps without rinsing the specimen off the glass slide. You can probably find a video online.

Do you have to have an oil immersion lens to use this kit or can you use a regular microscope?

An immersion lens is not required to use this kit.

Great beginners kit!

The kit is super easy to use. The instructions are super clear and I think that beginners would have a fine time using the kit. Even if I did not have experience with gram staining through college microbiology, I would still find this kit to be easy to use.NOTE: the dyes will stain your sink :) so gram stain in a sink you either do not care about or over some sort of plastic bin/bowl that you do not care about!
