Q: how do you open these? I've tried several different approaches.

I put them at the edge of my counter and push downward - then I got the old fashion bottle opener to lift the lid edge up on the flavor I wanted to open after they separated :-) if you don't have one of those get a spoon and put it under the metal edge and push up and they will open. Make sure the tape is all removed to keep them glued together. I used goo be gone. Hope this helps.
