Q: What kind of smell does it have to it?

It's earthy and not at all unpleasant, but it's powerful. If you're looking for something mild or light, don't get this. If you like nag champa, this will probably work for you.

Q: Are these backflow cones? Not sure if there is a difference

These are regular cones, back flow cones have a hole in the bottom drilled in so far where the smoke from the incense will be pulled through into the hole that is under them on the back flow incense burner to produce the back flow effect.
