The Big Book of Reading Comprehension Activities, Grade 1: 120 Activities for After-School and Summer Reading Fun

I bought it for my son after we moved to the UK when he was 6 yo so he could understand what he was learning at school. I found he hugely improved his reading skills where, for example, his teacher now says he will catch up with other students(of course this book is not the single factor but exert a big impact).It covers vocabulary they learn not only in reading class but also in science class. It also covers the differences between fiction and nonfiction, and different types of paragraphs(cause/effect, comparison, sequence...etc). Note it's written in American English. With a FANTASTIC variety of stories/subjects this workbook is sure to keep your child interested. Have a reluctant reader? Sit beside them and help them with the more difficult words. Some of the activities require writing, some do not. The topics are very engaging and relevant. They are not all fictional. Visit space, learn about fossils, firefighters, baseball and so much more. Good sized font, one lesson per page and colorful. The skill being taught/practiced is listed at the bottom of each page. Answers are provided in the back if needed.I sincerely hope the author writes more books like this for older grades. Our kids would LOVE to do them! As for this book, it's heading to one of our grandchildren. I was provided a copy of this journal by the publisher. That has not influenced my review. Thanks, Liz
