Weller WSP80 80 Watts Soldering Pencil for Silver Series Soldering Stations

Goes with me everywhere now.
Works real great. probably the best soldering implement I have owned.Things to note:- the grip is much thinner than models you may be used to. this allows finer control, but may get uncomfortably warm over extended use.-Get extra tips. Using the appropriate tip for the task at hand goes a long way towards making things easier.-When used with the appropriate power supply, the 80 watts this provides makes soldering an absolute breeze.-Maybe turn down the heat though. If you are used to the 20-40 watt irons from radio shack(maybe a dated reference now) you may be used to cranking the temp control full blast to get stuff done. This has more than enough wattage to heat quickly, so to avoid chip damage, only run it hot enough to work the solder. extra is just overkill, and will lead to the iron getting warm, possible chip damage, etc.-Heats up quickly. The tip (when used with the weller power supply) comes up to temp in all of about 5 seconds. this is very, very handy, and I think, promotes safety, because there is no reason to not turn it off while not in use. it'll come up to temp about as fast as it takes to get lined up on a joint anyways, so, BE SAFE.-The cord is a properly long length, and is composed of a very flexible material. Hopefully this will stand up to repeated use? only time will tell. (used to cables being a thicker, more rigid material, but I appreciate the control that the flex allows)

Perfect
Perfect! Easy install. New tip and retainer design much better then the original. Works flawlessly. It's nice to have my WD1 back in use.

Anyone with a Weller WD1 or similar that has a broken 65W iron should upgrade to this one... though not as ergonomic, those POS 65W irons break if you stare at them wrong. After replacing the 65W iron twice, when the third one neared end of life, I got this one (on the suggestion of a friend) and found that the quick-change tips make it priceless.

Verastle soldering iron for occasional work
I have been very happy as a hobbyist using this as my primary soldering iron. Enough power to solder wires, yet small enough to get into tight spaces.

Expensive
Weller better figure out that there are comparable like products out there. Works as described but I could have purchased another complete station for the price of this unit.

Still going strong after 10 years
Still going strong after 10 years of "moderate" use. The tips last for years and are cheaper than most of the competition. The ergonomics are comfortable, and it has a long soft, flexible, (silicone like) cord. I use this in conjunction with a WMRS station and I have had nothing but good results.
