Do NOT buy for a first beginner book- very few musical examples to develop instrumental proficiency
I am a professional teacher, one of my beginner students purchased this book to lead her initial guitar playing and we both found it to be very insufficient for beginners. A beginner needs to be introduced to concepts of gradually increasing difficulty in a slow and progressive manner. This book just dumps abstract musical concept after abstract musical concept on the reader with thousands of words, and provides very few musical examples! And the musical examples it introduces are very difficult for someone who has never touched a guitar. If you were to read this book, you would indeed have *knowledge* but you would not have *skill* or experience on the instrument. Also note that over 200 pages of the book consists of endless pages of scales and chords which is honestly a total waste of trees. Due to the nature of the fretboard, you really only need to show one scale shape and then give a simple one-sentence direction to derive the others. Same with chords, do we really need the SAME chords in every key for a total of 70 pages?! So it is really more of a reference book then a method book where one could work from beginning to end and develop instrumental proficiency.

One Of My Most Essential Books
I wouldn't say this is the "only" guitar book you'll ever need - but I would say it's probably the best I've ever seen. I reach for it every time I practice. The explanations are clear, and Marc Schonbrun writes in a way that keeps you interested. I also have his Everything series book on reading music, which is excellent as well. Definitely worth your time and money.

Perfect Gift
My grandson had taken guitar lessons for several years but stopped playing for a few years. He talked of getting back into playing and I made him a gift of book. He loves the book. He feels it's a great remedial help and a refresher of some lessons forgotten.

Best guitar book I have come across.
Best guitar book I have come across. It explains things in very simplistic detail. I highly recommend this book for intermediate or beginner players.

not for beginners
This book may be a descent reference book and would further your skills , but it definitely is not for beginners. I would return it if it wasn't such a hassle. Might come in handy much later.

Great for me
Really useful for a beginner with little musical background. Learn to read music traditionally or by guitar tabs.Great for learning chords in an effective and organized way.

Not a practical learning book at all
- This book does NOT do what it says on the tin.- It is absolutely NOT the only guitar book you’ll ever need.- There is almost NO practical teaching in it at all.- It IS more like a reference manual for guitar music theory. It has, for example, all positions of the main scales for every key- There are serious errors in this book! To prove what I mean, the first position of the A minor pentatonic scale is shown as starting on the 4th fret!!!I’m not quite sure why this book has such good reviews, but if you read them they seem to be from people who bought the book for someone else.I would not recommend this book AT ALL!

not good... don't fall for 5 or 4 ratings... trust me...
book is only good for beginners.... nothing great... all the topics can be found online.... there are Android apps which will give you all the sacles diagram and all the modes... but in this book only 2 modes are given and few scales are given.... so book is only good for beginners so that they can get a clear idea about where to start and what comes next which can also b found online completely full information .... so guys in my opinion dont go for it..... this is not at all the only book we'll ever need.....
