Champion Power Equipment 6250-Watt Portable Open Frame Inverter Generator with Quiet Technology

After the Texas freeze the spring of 2021, wife and I decided never again. Bought this particular generator due to it supporting 120/240 VAC and the inverter technology which reduces its fuel consumption, and knocks a few dB of the sound level (it does get a little bit quieter when the load drops but not enough to make a hill of beans). Sized it (5KW full load, 6.25 peak) so we could run a few critical circuits AND our central AC outdoor compressor along with the indoor air handler. Since we have a newer 4 ton variable speed compressor on our AC we found it is a lot gentler when it comes to power draw (soft starts instead of hard start), and with everything powered up in the house, and the AC running in cooling mode at full tilt, the generator only seemed to load up to 60 to 70 percent of full capacity, so surprisingly, we have a bit more overhead than planned, but that isn't a bad thing since the generator only cost about one fifth the amount of of a comparably priced generator from the big H. I was very impressed with the build quality of the unit, and it has performed flawlessly with my load tests, so I am sold as a Champion customer.

tl;dr: All the other positive reviews are spot-on. Great genset for the modern house full of sensitive electronics. However, here are some things you must know not all mentioned elsewhere: 0. READ THE FULL MANUAL FRONT-TO-BACK BEFORE ANYTHING. DO NOT RELY ON THE QUICK-START GUIDE AS THE HURRICANE IS HITTING. 1. The “12V” DC output: Keep in mind per the manual, the schematic, and in actuality, this is *totally* unregulated. Under no-load it measured 24V, 22V in Eco mode. Likely to come down under load, but might easily fry low-load sensitive 12V electronics. To its credit, the full manual warns about all this and states it should not be used other than with the supplied 12VPlug/BatteryClips cable, so effectively only to (carefully) charge up 12V automotive batteries. So why is it an automotive cigarette 12V connector likely to be (mis-)used with other things? One small peeve about the 12V cable: The clip ends should have been made unequal length, to avoid them touching. See the pic of how to avoid this. The other accessory, a nice auto/USB “2.4A” dual charger plug, should be used in a car, not on this generator since doing so would, well, contradict the instruction manual. Did not test it, but it features FCC and CE marks, so likely of decent quality. If you want to charge your USB cellphone/tablet/electronics, better to simply plug their AC chargers into the generator’s AC outputs. 2. Much has been said about the ergonomic miss of having the oil filler blocked by the control panel. Fair enough, but the genset comes with a small funnel and hose, and I had no trouble with my initial oil fill. Pour very gradually from your partially-needed second quart bottle to avoid excess oil spillage when full. The permanently mounted oil drain hose is a welcome feature. 3. You *will need* 2 quart bottles of conventional (not synthetic) 10W-30 motor oil. This is your 5-hour break-in oil. After that, Synthetic or conventional oil of specified grades are acceptable per the manual. Note the engine has no oil filter, so do hew to the manual's change intervals at the very least. 4. You’ll also *want* a ratchet handle, small extension and 8mm, 10mm and 13mm sockets to remove your droid’s restraining bolts and to fasten its feet and handle. 5. Yes, the Quick-Start guide neglects to mention the necessary removal of the shipping restraining hardware, or any mention of a break-in period, or the 12V issues. 6. Now for the AC output: Intelligauge display shows a constant 246V regardless of (fairly low) load or Eco setting. Actual measurement with a DMM was 244VAC and 122VAC on each leg. So within an acceptable 2%. Shows a constant 60Hz, and DMM-measured a perfect 60Hz spot-on, again without regard for load or Eco. Nice! 7. Impressive AC output quality. Had a look at the AC output waveform distortion on an analog oscilloscope through a transformer. See the three pics. The one that looks like a near-perfect sinewave is the Champion’s. The one with slightly flattened (“clipped”) tops is actually my utility’s supplied AC, for those who think utility AC must be perfection. Finally, the one with the “jaggies” is from my 20-year-old Generac XL4000 non-inverter generator, and was better than I though it would be, but not good enough for all my UPSs, instrumentation, electronics, etc. This is why I chose this Champion. 8. Noise: I had reasonable expectations. This unit is not whisper-quiet, but, then, there’s not much choice in the 240V + inverter + >4000W space. If you want really quiet, fuel-injection, soundproof enclosure, well it’ll cost you 4x the price. 9. Overall very satisfied. One pull on full choke, starts on next one on no choke. Nice! Remember, ground your generator, only run it outdoors, and never backfeed your house! In the event Champion Power Equipment actually reads these reviews, here’re some suggestions: a. Fix the Quick-Start Guide. b. Consider some kind of 12V regulation, or at least a different 12V output connector. c. Wishlist item: Have the Intelligauge show the load on each AC leg, to help one in balancing the load between the two. ——

This is a great product, especially if you are looking for an inverter generator that has the four prong 240v locking outlet. These are actually very hard to find and there’s not a whole lot of options in the market today. Honda makes one that has about 7000 W. It’s fuel injected, fully enclosed, extremely quiet, and also cost close to $5000 with tax. If you’d like to save about four grand and get most of the features, by all means get this unit! It performs very well. Started on the second pull out of the box. The eco-mode works surprisingly well. I previously owned a Dewalt 8000 W standard generator with eco-mode and it hardly did anything. This unit seems to have and almost infinite number of speeds that it will call upon depending on the load placed on the device. In short, it can be really very quiet sometimes/low load conditions. Still not as quiet as the Honda but much much quieter than my last unit. Overall the unit has some almost laughable mistakes in terms of its design, many of which are covered in other reviews so I won’t repeat them here. It also has a slight feeling of cheapness to it. Don’t get me wrong I think it will last, but it’s the sort of thing that you need to be careful with. This is unlike the Honda which I know a lot of municipal governments use to back up traffic signals when there are large scale power outages. Those things get knocked around all the time. I don’t think you would want to do that with this unit. However if you plan to use it for your home like most of us probably will, I think you will be very happy with your purchase, and just think of all that money you’re saving!

I’m very happy with this purchase. I do want to point out that you should examine your needs carefully before going this route. I bought this specific generator because I wanted one capable of a direct connection to my existing house electrical system through the 240V outlet on the generator plus the clean power advantages of an inverter. Also, I wanted it to be quiet, or at least quieter than the conventional generator we had. This Champion replaces an older, noisy, non-inverter generator that I no longer trust with the increasing amount of electronics in the house, including a new furnace. There are not many 240V affordable inverter generators like the Champion 6250. The only other inverter generator this big that I am aware of is the Honda EU7000iS; but it lists for over $5000 dollars and is way out of my price range. Bottom line; there is no such thing as a quiet, high power, low distortion, low cost generator, so you need to weigh your tradeoffs carefully. In particular, it is possible to buy two small inverter generators for roughly the same money and use a parallel kit to combine them into one source of power of about the same wattage. Those enclosed smaller units are quieter and lighter than the open frame unit, however, they will not produce 240V; only 120V. In my case, I could live without the 240V capability by not running the AC. But I wanted to use my existing wiring panel, interlock, inlet box, and L14-30 cable without modification. If you are willing to get an electrician to make some modifications, you may be able to pull off the multi-unit trick. (UPDATE: Its very unlikely you can do such a modification safely in a way that is legal. If you use do multiple small units, you need to run extension cords into your house. The multiple unit combination approach looks like its intended for RVs). 1. The Champion web site really helped me evaluate models and understand features. I need a model that has a floating neutral electrical system or can be modified to operate that way. I was able to easily find a clear description (with pictures) of the simple modification process needed for this specific generator in the customer service section of the Champion web site. (This information is surprisingly difficult to locate, or simply not available, at some other brands’ web sites that I checked). 2. Amazon quoted an eight day delivery time, but it actually came in four. The box packaging had lots of foam pads and cardboard panels to protect the innards. 3. Assembly was straightforward and can be done by one person. The unit is listed at 100+ pounds. but is nicely balanced; once it is out of the box, its easy to tip to get to the needed sides for access to remove the shipping brackets and install the wheels. Once assembled, be careful not to tip it up too far using the handle. After assembly, I tipped it too far (60 degrees or more) and it reached its tipping point and abruptly went vertical. The hinged handle is no help controlling the weight once it has reached that point. But you should never tip the generator this much since it will usually have gas in the tank and will spill! 4. There are some minor issues with the instructions but nothing too significant. Overall, these are the best generator instructions I’ve had. The one possibly important item is that the generator engine has a reusable foam air filter. The manual instructs that the filter should be oiled but it doesn’t mention this in the setup process. It is not mentioned in the Quick Start Guide either; only in the maintenance section. I didn’t catch that until doing the first oil change at 5 hours. (Subsequent oil changes after this break-in period are at 50 hours). So my generator ran its first 5 hours without being oiled which I don’t think is a big deal, but I wish I had caught that. 5. About the first oil fill; reading some other buyers comments had me worried about making a mess and I was way more careful than I usually am. The instruction’s precise reference to “37.2 ounces” of oil made me believe that it was necessary to get a fill of exactly 37.2 ounces. Now that I am writing this review, I see that the instructions actually say "add up to 37.2 fl. oz. (1.2 qt.) of oil ". "Up to" is not "exactly"! So don’t try to get this exactly right or you will make a mess! IMHO 36 oz. is fine. Put a quart it via the funnel. Then add no more that 4 more ounces guided by the little marks on the plastic oil jar. Allow time to let the oil drain out of the funnel and into the engine before removing the funnel hose; use paper towels and expect some drips. Check the oil level with the oil plug gauge. Not a big deal if you are prepared. (I found the drain and second oil fill to be more of a problem and will comment on that later). 6. The engine started on the second pull, which is fine, but I noticed that the red "overload" light was on and it stayed on for about a minute which seemed weird. Nothing was even plugged into the generator. I was in a bit of a panic and wondered if this was a normal first start condition or I should shut if off. I grabbed the manual and started looking at the instructions and the red light went out before I got to the relevant section. (Eventually, I realized that the green normal light had come on, but it is not as noticeable as the red light). I hope this doesn’t portend some problem that will surface later. This red light problem has not happened again since the first start and everything seems fine. During a recent outage, the generator started fine and ran for about six hours without any issues. 7. It would be nice to have some additional advice about when to use and not use the ECO mode which quiets the engine when the electrical load is small. Why wouldn’t I leave it on all the time? I can see how some people, accustomed to the constant sound of a traditional generator, might be bothered by the variation in the engine tone when it revs up and down. But I don’t have a feel for when and how often that will happen. It did happen while I was testing the generator when the refrigerator compressor kicked on but it worked ok. Can a large load stall the engine in ECO mode or is the disadvantage of ECO just the sound variation annoyance? I did not use the ECO mode during the recent outage and can’t comment on its characteristics during typical emergency use. 8. Be sure to read all the “NOTICE”s on pages 19 and 20 of the instructions; especially this one: “For gasoline restarts with hot engine in hot ambient temperature > 86°F (30°C), keep the choke in “CHOKE” position for only 1 pull of the recoil starter. After first pull, press choke to the “RUN” position for 3 more pulls of the recoil starter.” I’ve never heard of restarting a hot engine on a hot day with the choke on!! This used to be a big no-no. Maybe things have changed in the ten years since I last bought a small engine. I did indeed have some trouble restarting until I used the choke for exactly one pull. I don’t understand it, but be aware. 9. At the end of the break-in period I drained and changed the oil. Look at the picture on page 24 which shows something that looks like a rectangular cake pan as a drain pan. I used a regular round five quart car oil drain pan instead. I should have learned from the “choke” experience that these instructions should be taken literally! A low, small pan, just big enough for about 1.5 quarts would be better. The provided drain hose attached to the engine is a nice attempt to contain the drips, but I managed to get the hose itself submerged in oil using the regular size pan. The cap on the hose with its little tether chain is nice but, once submerged, is impossible to clean enough to prevent all dripping. . I thought I kept everything low enough to completely drain the engine but I only got about one quart out of the engine (vs. 1.2). I don’t know if this is because some oil burned off, the engine was drained while cold, or this is a normal amount. (Next time I will use a smaller pan and lift the generator a few inches to make sure I get all the old oil and see how much comes out with a warm engine) . Overall, I feel like I made a very good purchase. Be aware that the generator is different than conventional units so you may need to learn a few new tricks, like this old dog. Don’t leave it in the box until the next big storm; try it out and get some experience even if you are familiar with generators.

Six years later and still going strong. The power is out right now and the generator started with 1 pull. I had one episode of bad gas that required draining the carb, but otherwise the unit has been trouble-free and reliable.

CONTINUE SHOPPING 5.001/17/2021 The power actually went out less than a month after I got it Pretty nice inverter generator. I bought it shipped and the box was nicely protective, though the box had some dents and gouges The generator inside was perfect. I took off the shipping pieces, easily mounted the wheels and handle, poured just a half quart or so of fuel, added 5-30 synthetic and test ran it for a half hour or so till empty. Then put it under a cover in the heated garage for safekeeping. I think the 5:30 synthetic is a good choice because it's really not a lot of oil and often in a generator or more oil doesn't get changed very much so it seemed like pretty cheap protection and allows full temperature range operation without having to change the oil. Anyhow less than a month went by and when the power went out I waited 5 minutes for the power to come back on, when it didn't I went out to the garage and then poured in some gas. It's a pretty heavy unit but rolls easily with the included wheel kit and handle. Which brings up an important point, if you're considering a harbor freight generator the wheel kit is extra, on this wonderful inverter generator they include it. There is no electric starter, but I pulled out the manual choke gave it kind of a week pull and it started on that first pull. Keep in mind brand new oil ran just a week or two ago to be broken in and in a warm condition from inside storage, but yeah I was pretty impressed it started right up. Alsoo harbor freight doesn't have a 240 volt inverter generator. And that's really the main reason I bought this, it's the cheapest 240 inverter generator that Will meet my power needs. Would be nice to have one that was a little bit bigger, but then the fuel consumption would be higher. This runs all our winter loads except the electric heat in the greenhouse. We have a pretty efficient updated home with all LEDs and modern efficient appliances and should be able to run AC in the summer if we are careful not to run the microwave and the toaster at the same time. So here we are 6 hours into our first outage and watching the Bills against the Ravens in good comfort. Initially I filled it up to about 7/8 full, there's a good gauge on top of the tank, I ran it for about 3 hours before adding more fuel at that point it was at halfway on the gauge. Using a sound meter app on my phone I verified that yeah it was about 68 decibels at 20 ft about 83 right up next to it. that may be a lower reading than a loud person talking next to a meter, but the constant drone of an engine is pretty loud. Basically as they say it is as loud as a vacuum cleaner or maybe a little louder. All in all I'm very satisfied is I don't think there's another generator that offers inverter technology and 240 volts with the low distortion in this price range. I'll keep this until champion or someone else makes all these specs available in a unit that's enclosed for better sound insulation, don't get me wrong this one's probably pretty quiet for the open frame design and it is a definite buy. In my opinion compared to what else is on the market you're getting much more than your paying, but it's not everything you could wish for, how are you going to get that at a bargain price?

This is an excellent and powerful small generator. I read the reviews for it and this Champion 6250-watt seemed like an excellent product that was reasonably priced. I can confirm that it is an excellent product. I had to use it during a power outage and it plugged into my access port and powered the house circuits with no problem. It is very easy to operate, and I now test run it once a month and it starts easily every time. Has various settings including power saving which is great. It is relatively light-weight (for a generator) and easy to move around with the wheels and moving handle. Although it is rated for "quiet technology" it is still fairly noisy but that is to be expected for a gas powered generator. Highly recommend.

10/03/2024 update: I live in an area heavily impacted by Hurricane Helene, this generator ran 75 hours without a single issue, we were able to take hot showers which was a god send with the humidity, I am so thankful I bought this and was prepared. Most people left our community, we were able to stay and save all of our food in the fridge with this. Great performance from this genset! I recently had a 10 circuit transfer panel installed, I put the hot water heater in the single 30 amp circuit. I knew that this generator should be able to run it, but was slightly apprehensive, as this is rated 5000 watts running, and a standard hot water heater is 4500 watts roughly, so its a real test of the generators output. Sure enough, it ran the hot water heater great, it did get quite a bit louder but thats just how it is when you ask any generator to run at full load. When running with ECO mode on and the water heater breaker OFF, I found the sound level very reasonable, I could not even hear when I was in the front of my house (it was in the backyard) and I have a small tenth of an acre yard (new construction lol). I feel like this generator is probably at the limit of what I would accept sound wise, anything louder is likely to be disruptive to my neighbors as we are all so close together. The clean inverter power is great for my UPS units, they work well on it and do not complain. After I floated the neutral, they kept popping the GFCI when connected directly via extension cord, but the 240 volt twist lock is not GFCI protected, so when connected to my transfer switch, there is no issue. Just something I noticed and wanted to make note of here, if you do convert to floating neutral. Overall, im happy with the customer service (had a video on how to break neutral bond! super easy), the sound level and the ease of use. Good combination of features while keeping the cost reasonable. We dont all have $5000+ for a Honda EU7000, so im glad this exist for a fraction of the cost. If anything im regretting I didnt get the newer model they (champion) just came out with , but oh well, this works great for my needs.
