Cheap plastic base, but actually looks really good and works well. You would never know it wasn't factory.There is one very important tip that I've seen hinted at but not mentioned directly. The OEM shift lever shaft has a grove machined in to it such that when the shift knob is clamped down it cannot be pulled up and off the shaft. This replacement knob one does *not* have the same shape and does not fit into the groove. Thus if you pull up on the knob it will come off. Even fully clamping the included band will not prevent it from coming off.The solution? A small hose clamp. Tighten it down really well and it won't go anywhere. And the hose clamp is easier to install and uninstall than the metal band anyway.To replace the knob: 1) Carefully pry the plastic trim piece around the base of the boot. Think "squeeze" in order to get the plastic tabs loose from their housing. 2) Pull the boot up above the knob. 3) (the only tricky part) Pry the metal ring off the knob-to-shaft interface. I used a small and medium flathead screwdriver and a pair of pliers for grip. 4) Once the metal band is off, pull up and the knob will come off. 5) Reverse steps for installation (but use a hose clamp instead of the replacement metal band).You might do this in the parking lot of a hardware store. I purchased a replacement universal shift knob from pepboys. Was always coming loose and drove me crazy. I saw this boot online and bought it. took 60 seconds to install, is nice and tight and looks sharp. you will need wire cutters or thin needle nose plyers to crimp the clasp properly... Highly recommend it. This is a real unbiased review from a regular consumer.

Great replacement to a severely worn factory unit. Great price. The boot itself smells pretty strongly of petroleum/chemicals for a while, but it dissipates in time. The shift knob cap that displays R/1-5 gets a bit loose when hot. I'm guessing the glue that holds it in place is just weakening with the heat, then resetting as things cool. Overall I am pleased.

When I first looked at it, it looked like it was not going to work because the old boot was held on with elastic. But when I removed the old boot I saw that there was a plastic base that came out- the new base clipped right in and fit very easily. Whole thing took about 3 minutes.

This knob is a good temporary fix. After 2 months the chrome turned into a weird pink color. Then the knob came loose and now it spins around everywhere whenever I shift. The next thing that happened is the boot came apart from the chrome lining.

This shifter fits great and looks awesome too. It's exactly what I was hoping for. The only complaint i have is that the 'clip' that holds it on the shaft isn't worth two cents, i replaced it with a 5/16"-5/8" hose clamp, now it's nice and tight and the hose clamp is a lot easier to use. I suggest this to anyone who wants a better looking shift knob and boot, well worth the money!

A little on the cheap side but it still might work.

Item was shipped extremely fast. Fits perfect. Gave a great new look inside the car and I love it. Some reviews say it smells but Jetta mk4 they all stink from the manufacturer anyway.

For the money a very nice shifter and handle. Some slight design differences between this and the VW original but nothing to worry about. Looks very smart with the chrome ring around the boot.

Bought this product for my wife's 2003 Jetta since the original shifter boot was torn and showing it's age. Nice product, good price and very easy to install!
