Over rated...
Amy Herzog has been hailed as one of the shiniest new stars in American theater. Undoubtedly, she has a flair for dialog. Watching her plays actually performed onstage is always fun. But in the final analysis, it seems to be much ad about nothing. She mines her unusual family history for all its worth (a bunch of die hard leftists, Stalinists, and progressives of all sorts): amusing, witty. But in the final analysis, these are characters who do not really grow and develop. They remain frozen in their time worn attitudes ( in particular, the grandmother character who appears in both plays ) while the younger generation is trying to rationalize the behavior of their elders without a trace of true insight. However... Ms Herzog is very talented, and still very young, and who knows but she may yet develop into a serious playwright.

Losing It
I enjoyed "After the Revolution." It has a great pace to it. It also has an unexpected ending that makes you think "maybe the central characters aren't always in the right." In "4000 Miles" Amy Herzog loses a little bit of the pace. Moments shine in this play but as a whole it feels like an idea instead of a beginning, middle, and end sort of play.

very well done
A set of contemporary plays, very well written by Amy Herzog. I'm always relieved to read good contemporary literature for the stage.
