History comes to life!
This charming and inspiring tale brings to life the harmony and religious tolerance that existed between Muslims, Christians and Jews during the era of Muslim Spain. A must read for those who wish to pass on this invaluable historical lesson to the younger generation.

Ahistorical and insulting to the suffering of Jews and Muslims
While this is a lovely story of multiculturalism with an important message for young children, I also feel I have to point out that the events in the book never happened. The Reconquista was a bloody time in Iberia's history, and I think to whitewash the actions of Fernando in the slaughter of many Muslims and Jews, dismantling what was already an ethnically and religiously tolerant state, and present it as a model of conviviality is an insult to the memories of all those who died during the Reconquista. The idea that the mosque was saved so that everyone had a place to worship is a nonsense as well, as Muslims in Spain are to this day still campaigning for the right to pray in that building. If you're going to choose a period of history to expound the values you hold dear, find one that actually represented those values. Don't rewrite history.
