Q: Will these work on a mountain bike shock?

I put one of these mounts on my daughter's bike, it fits well either on the handlebar tube or the vertcal stem that holds the handlebars on her bike, or other tubes of that size. If you're asking does it fit the fork tube on a mountain bike, probably not. The fork tube on my Diamondback is too fat for the clamp to fit.

I would say no. The basket alone with out anything in it is a lot heavier than a water bottle with water in it.

Your question is vague. How are your handlebars angled? Without knowing that, it is difficult to get you a good answer. Assuming that your handle bars are round, then the bracket will rotate 360 degrees around your handle bars. The two parts of the bracket are held together by a screw. The two parts can be rotated with respect to one another by 90, 180, and 270 degrees. To try to be a little more clear about that, once the bracket is mounted to the handle bars, the part that holds the water bottle cage can be turned 90 degrees, then another 90, then another 90, and then another 90 back to the original position. It can only be rotated in 90 degree steps. So that means that unless the place where you want to mount the bracket is not completely level, or completely vertical, then it will not be possible to have the water bottle completely vertical. Not a big deal, unless your water bottle leaks badly. Mounting to the handle bar stem might be an option if it does not work on the handle bars. I have about 800 miles on mine, still working great.
