LIZZIE is a psychological thriller that reveals many layers of the strange and fragile Lizzie Borden, who stood accused of the infamous 1892 axe murder of her family in Fall River, Massachusetts. An unmarried woman of 32 and a social outcast, Lizzie (Chloe Sevigny) lives a claustrophobic life under her father's cold and domineering control. When Bridget Sullivan (Kristen Stewart), a young maid, comes to work for the family, Lizzie finds a sympathetic, kindred spirit, and a secret intimacy soon blossoms into a wicked plan. Story is valid even today
Yes, nudity. Otherwise, the stress of bad parenting continues to be an issue today, not just based on gun killers, but the many other ways someone can be pushed into questionable sanity. Parenting is tough enough on good days. I helped train horses for several years, and raised kids. Mental health remains a critical field even after millenia. And this was well-acted within its milieu.

80% Fiction
This is movie is about as loosely based on the actual historical account as you can get. Probably 20% fact and 80% fiction. There was no lesbian romance between Lizzie and the maid, and yet that became a focal point of the movie. I still gave it three stars because the acting was good and engaging enough watch.

A Bad Time for Single Women
Before watching Lizzie, I didn't realize the lot of single women at the time of the story (1892). No wonder so many got married in their teens. Otherwise their career choices appear mostly limited to farm labor or caring for other peoples' babies and elderly. Bridget (Kristen Stewart) who worked as a maid in the Borden house had to tolerate nightly "visits" from her elderly employer. Getting another job was nearly impossible without a recommendation from the current employer - and Bridget feared homelessness and starvation. Lizzie (Chloe Sevigny) who was actually part of the family saw that she too was likely to be left with nothing. The final murder act was quite spectacular, as the perpetrators went naked to do the grisly deed. Chloe as an actor has never been afraid to take something as far as it can go.

Great Movie
This unsolved murder is hypothetically played out believably by very good actors.

Great Take!
I love Kristen Stewart, so of course I will watch anything with her in it. And this one is a bit win for me; the Lizzie Borden murders have fascinated me since I was quite a young child. And I love how Lizzie is portrayed in this film, and love the relationship between her and the maid, Bridget "Maggie" Sullivan. I highly recommend this to anyone who is or has ever been fascinated by Lizzie Borden.

Some Good Acting, but Misses the Mark
To be honest, I found this film tedious and dull. At about twenty minutes into it, the film was moving so slowly I was hoping it was about over. The plot is, in my opinion, unlikely at best, and contributes to the film's failure to deliver. Even good performances from Chloe Sevigny, Kristen Stewart, and other cast members can't force this plot into the realm of the genuinely plausible. I did like the sets, and I don't mean that to be cynical or sarcastic -- they are very realistic for the time period of the film. I have one other concern: although she's an attractive young lady, is Kristen Stewart really going to have to doff her clothes in every film she makes now? In my opinion, she's always been exceptionally good at acting, but the nude scenes she's been in don't involve much in the way of acting. I'm beginning to think I like the earlier Kristen Stewart a lot better. I hope Hollywood finds some higher quality roles for her that better showcase her acting ability.

I thought that “Lizzie” was an incredible film, absolutely brilliant. Whilst the film must make an assumption about events as nobody actually knows what happened, the film does present what happened in a very plausible, believable and honest way. If one reads about the real case, then it can be seen for example that the manner in which the crime took place, who was there and what they were wearing, makes sense in the film. I think that director Craig William Macneill has made an amazing film (it is only his second feature as director) and the cast are incredible. Chloë Sevigny as Lizzie Borden and Jamey Sheridan as Lizzie's father do a brilliant job or portraying a very uneasy Father Daughter relationship, the rest of the household family – Lizzie's sister Emma played by Kim Dickens and Lizzie's Step-mother Abby Borden played by Fiona Shaw, the actresses give fantastic supporting roles. The real star of the film though for me is Kristen Stewart as housemaid Bridget Sullivan. It just so happened that a couple of days before watching “Lizzie”, I'd seen Kristen Stewart in Kelly Reichardt's “Certain Women” which I was watching for the second time. Stewart is clearly (for me) a great actress, and that the two characters (Elizabeth Travis in “Certain Women” and Bridget Sullivan in “Lizzie”) were given by the same actress shows just how good an actress she is. The narrative gives the majority of the story in “Lizzie” in flashback, and it works very well in helping to explain the events that take place. The pace of the film is necessarily slow and works well in maintaing tension. The film is dark and in more ways than one – the household is illuminated mostly by candlelight and oil lamp, and again this seems to help with the atmosphere of the film, something that, from the opening scene – the music also does. Although there is no “based-on-real-events” kind of statement given at the beginning of the film but there is some factual information given at the end. On the DVD (ASIN: B07M5HGBKB) you get: “Lizzie” (1 hour 41 minutes) Scene Selection Set Up: 2.0 Stereo, 5.1 Surround Sound I found some of the dialogue rather quiet at times, which is the only negative thing I can find to say about “Lizzie”. I think that subtitles might have helped me in that respect, so it is perhaps worth mentioning that although it states on the Amazon Product Description that there are English Subtitles For The Hearing Impaired, that I could find no Subtitles of any sort on the DVD.
