Unless you have a junction box in the mirror it will not work. Some custom mirrors do have cutouts for power outlets and switches

Can this be mounted in the opposite direction to the picture shown? Upside down ?

My Husband said it can. We have these fixtures and the scones in our new home and some of the sconces had to be turned the opposite direction due to the placement of the junction box. These are really nice light fixtures for the price.
