Good Movie
I remember enjoying this movie in the 1980's. Accidentally came across it here, so I bought it. The first copy I received was unwatchable. Idk how but it was 100% garbage and I returned it. Thank you, Amazon, for that. I decided to roll the dice and order a replacement vs. just a direct refund, and I'm glad I did. The first copy must have just been a fluke. This copy was perfect and brought me back to when the movie was first released. Now, about the movie itself: an older me, now a Marine Veteran myself, I found some of the movie a bit unrealistic. Yet it was still entertaining, so I'm not trying to slam it. Ken Wahl was still enjoyable as Doc Jardian, Layne Smith (My Cousin Vinnie) and the supporting cast was great to watch, but the best part was watching the now 70-year-old - early 1980's version of Cheryl Ladd. Oh my was she beautiful.I'm giving it 5 stars. I'll rewatch it again and again in the years to come.

A guy's kind of chick-flick
While this is a love story it is intertwined within the Vietnam War. It is a very violent and even humorous movie. Women may balk at the violence and wonder how anyone could call it a chick-flick to begin with. Well, it has a love story, and for us guys this is about as close as we want to get to that!To summarize briefly, Ken Wahl meets Cheryl Ladd and they click. Most of the clicking is probably due to the horrific nature of the war. But through circumstance and opportunity this love grows. Then through explosions and death the story progresses to an ending that even guys will agree is acceptable. I know I did.I first saw this movie overseas a couple of decades ago on a VHS rip off of a laser disc. At some point I craved seeing it again and bought the VHS version from Amazon. As soon as it comes out on DVD (fingers crossed) I'll buy that as well. This is a movie I consider a keeper. It has a good story and some good war-type violence. Once you throw in some humor then I am good to go! Hurry up Mr. DVD Maker...

The Best of Vietnam War romance movies
There aren’t too many Vietnam War romance movies as competition, but in any event Purple Hearts is my favorite in this category. An intense attraction between a Naval doctor and an Army nurse is anchored by strong performances by Ken Wahl and Cheryl Ladd. The first glance between them reflects the intensity of what is to follow. Separate venues for the movie from a MASH-like unit, to the Saigon underworld, to a naval ship, to battlefields (veteran character actor R. Lee Ermey, who often played military roles, is great), to a luxury hotel, and finally to a VA hospital keep the story fresh and moving along at a good clip. I became very invested in the characters and what would happen to them. Not ashamed to admit that after seeing this movie multiple times my eyes still well up at the final scenes. On the downside, the battlefield special effects now seem a bit junior varsity post-Saving Private Ryan. The dialog can be a bit clunky now and then. And traveling 200 miles through enemy territory with a wounded man stretches credulity to the max. Still, when the film focuses solely on Wahl and Ladd, it doesn’t get much better for me.

Great love story!
This is both a love story and a war story. I'm not big on war movies, however, this is one of my favorite films. I wish they would bring it out on DVD.This story is about a doctor (Wahl) that enlists in the service during war time in what seems to be an escape from the life that he was leading. He is engaged to be married and is set up to have his own practice when he gets home. She (Ladd) is a nurse that he meets after transporting a critical patient to the area hospital. There is instant attraction between them. He starts to take some risks in order to be able to see her. He also risks his life in order to spend some R&R time with her. He realizes that he never really loved his fiance and falls in love with her (Ladd). It is a wonderful film and depicts some of the many hardships and heartbreaks of war. The acting is a little hammy at times, however the storyline is fabulous. I would highly recommend watching this film.

"Nothing could have prepared him for the violence, fear, adventure...or the woman".
Purple Hearts (1984) is another 80's era Vietnam film, but unlike Apocalypse Now (1979), Rambo: First Blood (1982), Uncommon Valor (1983) Platoon (1986), Behind Enemy Lines (1986), and many, many more...this one is like the Gone With the Wind of Vietnam War films. The reason for that is simple: its plot essentially revolves around--- LOVE. The film is about a young Navy surgeon Don Jordian (Ken Wahl) and a nurse by the name of Deborah Solomon (Cheryl Ladd), who both serve overseas during the Vietnam War. The two meet by a chance/fate, call it whatever you want. They don't hit it off at first very well...there is also war that serves as the background story, which also complicates their growing affection for one another, separated by distance (both serving at different locations in Vietnam) the two will endure...The ending of the film really caught my by surprise. Additional plus.

DVD Purple Hearts
DVD difficile, voir impossible à trouver en langue Française . Reste en Anglais. Cela ne change rien pour ce Téléfilm d’honnête qualité sur une période de la guerre du Vietnam.
