Strangers (ITV) [DVD]

GORDIAN KNOT OR TUMBLEWEED?
Tumbleweed, I fear. Strangers set out in an interesting enough manner, even though the first two episodes rely a bit too heavily on cliff-hanging. But as the story progresses, the improbabilities increase and what slight continuity there was is routinely thrown aside to allow more screen time for tepid lesbian snogging. There's beer aplenty as characters seem to smoothly glide through space free of the constraints of time and through time free of the constraints of space. Day is night then day or night; we meet in hotels only to suddenly reappear in various condos; and did anyone notice that the restaurant cum apartment was torched? Where did our hero sleep that night or day? Or night? And the less said about Lord Percy's hairdo, the better. This viewer can only conclude that the title "Strangers" refers to the relationship between the script and any acknowledged states of existence.

International Woman Of Mystery
When I first saw the trailer for Strangers (then titled ‘White Dragon’) and saw John Simm was playing the lead, it was a no brainer to pick it up. Watching it on TV though wasn’t quite what I expected. The series started off very well but it was dragged out quite a bit and could easily have been told in a fewer episode count. It builds up throughout but by the time it comes to a head, you’ve probably already had enough resulting in an underwhelming pay off.John Simm and Anthony Wong are terrific with a great supporting cast in Katie Leung , Dervla Kirwan and Emilia Fox.Its definitely worth it if you’re a fan of the conspiracy thriller genre of if like me, you just love John Simm!

Not credible, watchable but not riveting
I'm not one that believes good actors can turn a mediocre script into a good film or series and Strangers certainly proved that. Had I actually watched this on live tv I doubt I would have made it past the second episode. The whole thing lacked credibility and seemed drawn out, probably to justify the expense of filming in Hong Kong. The advantage of a DVD is that you can watch two episodes at a time but this wasn't exactly because the drama was riveting, or edge of the seat stuff. As for Emilia Fox I thought her character was as shallow as the plot and I expected Clarrisa or Jack to suddenly enter the scene to tell Nikki a post mortem was pending. The ending was a bit of an anti climax, not unexpected and not one that made you gasp with astonishment. As to the blue ray disk itself, the picture quality was excellent but on disc one there was a couple of wobbles with sound, that suddenly faded and crackled.

A good drama
Whenever the actor John Simm appears in a series, i really do not think twice about purchasing the dvd. He is a superb actor yet underrated. I have never seen him acting in something bad.The series is set in Hong Kong which is not my favotite city. The story is excellent but it could have easily been done in four episodes as opposed to eight. All in all a great piece of drama, but somewhat long winded. No point in spoiling it and telling you what it is all about, but am surprised at the negative reviews.

A Wonderful Gripping and Human Interest Story
This was a brilliantly acted story, full of mystery and intrigue. To me, John Simm is one of the most outstanding actors of our time. If this was a novel, I would call it a page-turner. What I found especially praiseworthy was the fact that I was genuinely interested in the personalities of all of the characters and I wanted to get inside their minds to guess how they would deal with the situations that they faced. Just wonderful!

Was very interesting and kept us looking forward to seeing next episode to see where story went next. Even to the end there was a twist. Would watch it again
