The Very Best Of Kris Kristofferson

A Lesser Effort
I bought this CD for the nice collection of songs from a true artist. Sadly, though, the price should have told me it would not be original recordings. Now there is nothing wrong, up to a point, with an artist doing later versions of their hit songs. But, when such versions are put out by a label just to make some money when, in fact, the artist's heart may not really be in it, it is almost like a breach of trust by the artist. Yes, this is one of those caveat emptor situations--buyer beware! This will be a disc I will give to the local library, and I will break down and pay the price for the originals. I guess I'll just chalk this one up to "lessons learned".

Never Mind The Singer, Hear The Songs
Kris Kristofferson writes brilliant songs - For The Good Times, Help Me Make It Through The Night being the two best well known of his. What is less well known is that Kristofferson has a post-grad Eng Lit degree from Oxford, and the literary quality of his writing is evident in all of these songs. Many of them have been hits for other artists, because the problem is that Kristofferson cannot sing; his voice is not one that anyone would listen to with unalloyed joy - it is like having your t*sticles rubbed with sandpaper. He makes Bob Dylan sound like Andy Williams. However, if you enjoy lyrics and want some rough pleasure, this album provides it with harsh intensity.

Fabulous Lyrics
A very good selection. It's all about the words. – 4 StarsOk, so I’m the first to admit that Kristofferson as a singer is an acquired taste, but he sure wrote some great lyrics. My personal favourites on this collection are: ‘We must have been out of our minds’, ‘Me and Bobby McGee’, and the wonderful ‘Sunday Morning Coming Down’. There are some country classic duets too, featuring Dolly Parton, Rita Coolidge, and Joan Baez in a rendition of ‘Hello In There’ that is raw with emotion.Overall, this CD showcases a really good range of Kristofferson’s work, and is easy listening as country music goes. It’s also excellent value for money.

Poet with a heartbreaking soul
34 years ago I had an excruciating summer of excitement and heartbreak, and what I thought what love - and Kristofferson's songs were the soundtrack. That those memories, which concern people no longer in my life, surface so readily when I listen to his music is a tribute to his talent, his knack of finding just the right words to touch my soul. I gave away my original copy of what was then a tape of these songs, because they hurt too much at the end. I thought I could stand it now, but it was hard.

Just a very good singer but superb songs
Possibly the most talented song writer ever showcasing his best work. There are many better singers but as its the writer singing these songs you know they are being presented the way they were first envisaged.

The Great Kristofferson!
What a songwriter! Here is a treasure trove of his awesome music and lyrics. His vocals drip with raw power and the listener receives the "true" delivery of the songs, as Kris intended. Like Dylan, though, Kris' forte is as writer. Not so much as singer. This, regretably, makes listening to the author sing 'em infrequent for me. I'd much rather hear Peter, Paul and Mary sing "Blowin' In The Wind" than Dylan. And in Kris' case, Johnny Cash, Sammi Smith, Ray Price, etc., excel in doing Kris' music proud. I can listen to their renditions over and over with greater ease. This CD, though, does get high marks for passion and grit. Quite an experience.
