IMAX: Under the Sea

Possibly the best application of 3D among Blu-Ray 3D discs so far
This disc represents the best example of 3D photography available for Blu-Ray 3D at this time (17-Nov-2010). And, where one might fear that it would be undermined by insipid commentary from Jim Carrey, that fear turns out to be misplaced, with only a few brief exceptions.Having done 3D (it should really be called "stereo") photography in the past, I can say that there are ways to do it well, and ways to do it poorly. Poor technique, and/or difficult subject matter, lead to artifacts (like distracting cases of the left image bleeding through into the right image, and vice versa - imperfect presentation technology is a factor in such cases, but stereo photographers know they face such problems, and failure to allow for them shows a lack of care) and, in extreme cases, even to difficulty in mentally assembling the 3D scene. The stereo photography on this disc is not perfect in every case, but, overall, it is the best I've seen yet from any Blu-Ray 3D title (and I've bought all of the IMAX conversions available to date, and several of the few available films). Sit directly in front of your TV, and you can reach out and touch many of the creatures they've captured. It is a thing of beauty. (You will, for instance, probably never see a potato cod captured more perfectly.) In the rare cases where quality problems emerge it is in situations where stereo photography is just plain problematic - scenes with significant, but unpredictable, depth of field, high contrast elements, and subjects whose proximities to the camera(s) vary uncontrollably, leading to excessive parallax at times. I have no idea what equipment the photographers who made this IMAX film worked with, or what the state of the art currently is (or was at the time), but, in my experience, they'd have been hard-pressed to do better in practice. If I were to pick any of the currently available Blu-Ray 3D titles to show-off 3D (stereo) television, or just for the pleasure of repeated viewing, this is the one I would choose.

OUTSTANDING!
As a SCUBA Instructor and an owner of my first 3D TV, I highly recommend this! I was a bit disappointed in the 3D movies that I've seen. The 3D was good, but I wanted to see what 3D could really do. I wanted in my face 3D effects. This DELIVERS!How about dolphin fish swimming up to your nose? I'm sure you will also reach out to touch them. The photography is fantastic. Nothing beats diving, but this is about as close as you can get without getting wet. Plus, it would require many dives and thousands of dollars to travel to prime reefs to see all that is delivered in this movie. As a PADI instructor, I'm proud that PADI is a contributor with its Project Aware, the purpose of is to protect the world's reefs as we are literally killing them with our pollution, human waste, climate warming, fishing practicing and at the bottom is poor diving practices and lack of buoyancy control.Never touch any coral! I keep my hands clasped while diving. It just kills me to see divers destroying our reefs. There is massive damage to what were beautiful reefs in the Florida Keys. It breaks my heart to see reefs that I onced dived on, now totally dead and absent of fish. I no longer travel to the keys and I avoid cattle boats full of poorly trained, over-weighted divers, who break reefs with every kick. You will definately enjoy this film. My only complaint is I wanted it to be longer! I will be watching it again. Hopefully, it will make you want to learn how to dive.Find a good instructor who teaches you to use the right amount of weight and who teaches you how to achieve neutral buoyancy. Of the certified divers, that I didn't train, coming into my advanced classes, none were weighted properly and didn't have a clue how to do so. One 95lb woman had 24lbs of weight, when she needed 7lbs.Buy this one! (forgive me and my soap box, please!)

Some parts take your breath away!
Come on negative thinking reviewers! IF YOU OWN 3D BLU-RAY equipment and any decent 3D screen and anyone you know likes under sea tv -if you ever liked an old Jacques Eaves Cousreau ducu-Sea-mentary and you do not have this then you have not seen what your 3D equipment can even dream of showing you! Ok the best part May be the potato cod that floats in the middle of your living room if it was any closer you have a big fish on your lap and you can just about touch him on the nose. Or the Australian sea lions at the end oh my gosh they look like puppies playing underwater it's amazing. No seriously if Jim Carrey can be a comedian he sure can be a narrator too - if you felt any closer and a lot of the scenes you'd be soaking wet not getting. And you have to see the grassy sea dragons not kidding grassy sea dragons and they arevfor real - amazing creatures if you're never seen them before you wouldn't believe they were real. Ok that's about enough for anything on this soap box and seriously they talk a little bit about inconvenient truth but not enough for it to turn you off for even one second of the rest of the beauty of this blue ray it's amazing it's all appropriate and you can show it to anyone even your mother in law in fact She will probably be really impressed that you take such a keen interest in nature's beauty no one should be without this video in 3d with good 3d equipment and in they're watching every other month or so pile of discs. Don't be home without it. Even if you got a very good used copy.
