Vogue Knitting Shawls, on the Go!

Pricy for the size
Some of the patterns are pretty such as the Vine stitch wrap and the Diamond shawl. But some of the shawls are costume-like like the Sheep shawl and the Floral mohair. I suppose if you were prone to flights of fancy then go for it. My problem is the price and value of the book. $25 for a book that is 7x5 inches. But the back of the book lists it for $12.95 which is more reasonable.

Editors were asleep
The patterns are varied, ranging from difficult to easy. I enjoyed flipping through and getting ideas from this book. However, when I was trying to match my stash to the shawl patterns I noticed that several of the patterns do not specify how many skeins are needed. The format is generally [number of balls] of [type of yarn]. For the type of yarn, they specify the weight and yardage for the individual ball, but not the total yardage for the entire project. So without the number of skeins needed, it is a wild guess for the knitter. With missing something as basic as this, it makes me worry about all the instructions. Definitely a rush to press here, wait for the next edition.

buy for the cover shawl
I'm knitting the cover shawl now with Kureyon yarns and it's a lovely design although instructions are a bit awkward. Some very lovely shawls are included here especially Meg Swansen's shetland shawl. There are several beginner knitting shawls, some drop stitch shawls, sheep shawl, easy lacework shawls. Negative is that two of the shawls were in VKs scarf book and here just updated with a different yarn. They are by Pam Allen and Shirley Paden. For shawl knitters not an essential purchase but nice enough at this price. My favorite shawl book is still that by Cheryl Oberle.

Great patterns
This book is small and compact, but packed with great shawl patterns! From patterns thatare definitely unique to some pretty traditional designs, it's one of thefavorites in my library. I also bought Shawls, Two, which is just as good.

Knitting book
I just finished the pattern on the cover and was pleased that the pattern was easy to follow. There are a couple of other patterns in the book that look interesting. S.E.

Enjoyable for knitters
I've made several projects from this book and they are superb. The book is very packable for on-the-go and clearly written. Great stocking stuffer for knitters

shawly knot!
I don't profess to be an expert knitter by any stretch of the imagination, but as with most books that specialise on one type of garment there is always bound to be some patterns you love and some you hate! The skill level indicators are pretty accurate, and I am half way through both a begginers and an intermediate level project, and really enjoying them - the instructions are clear, and the book's yarn guide makes it simple to substitue other yarns more readily available in the UK, and it's tiny size makes it great to carry around with you.I don't think I will be investing in the second book in the series, but I don't egret buying this one!
