Great game
I liked the in depth story of the game's plot. There are also new gameplay mechanics that interested me.

The tactical game worth waiting for
I originally played Valkyria Chronicles 1 years ago, and loved it, but this game takes everything that was rough about earlier games, hammers them out and delivers a super fun tactical experience. Although it says 4 on the box, it really is a story that runs in parallel to the earlier games, so you can jump right in with this one without having played any of the others. The game itself is amazing. The battles feel more varied and need more thought especially on harder modes to achieve high scores or (in some cases) complete. The multiple classes (scouts, troopers, lancers, grenadiers, snipers and tanks) are varied enough you have to change up who you put in the field under certain conditions, a nice change from the original game where you could almost solo chapters with scouts. I feel like I am also considering more of the weapon options than in earlier games, and deploying them with actual thought as opposed to settling on one and running with it.While the main story is in line with what previous titles brought (a stark take on war somehow mingled with animu whiplash humor tones), it holds its own. Where the story really shines is in the side chapters, each driven by members of your squad who aren't the main characters. They are the foot soldiers who you can get killed in a mission if you screw up and now they are fleshed out and explored to make that loss really hit. In some ways, they are the true stars of the game for me, making my squad feel real and invested.I would buy this game again without a thought. It is good for new players and for old.

Superior gameplay to the original, but turgid plot
I really enjoyed the original Valkyria Chronicles and it always seemed strange that there was no proper sequel on the main Playstation console. This is, finally, that proper sequel. The gameplay is extremely similar to the original, but with a fairly large number of mostly well thought out tweaks and changes that make the missions and game more interesting and challenging. This includes sensible things like reducing the command point cost of using tanks (that were almost a waste of time in the original) to new units like Grenadiers that really present new tactical choices (albeit slightly at the expense of Lancers) and choosing leaders from among your squad. The side mission Squad Stories are a nice touch as well. It all adds up to more variety, depth and content than you got with the original. My one complaint is the story and how it unfolds. The story in the original was hardly amazing, but it moved along. A lot of the story in this game unfolds painfully slowly in multiple chapters that need to be individually clicked through with some really turgid (and at times crass) dialogue (both in content and delivery). At least a third of this should have ended up on the cutting room floor. It's not absolutely terrible, but it's hard to describe as good. But you don't play a game like this for its story. The bottom line is that it is a very good - and improved - turn based strategy game with the same really good art design and feel that the original had. Just about five years later than I would have liked!

Very niche and boring to be honset
If you want more VC1, well here you go. If you where not a fan of the first game 10 years ago then stay away.VC4 is not bad if you enjoy VN and casual turn-based easy mode strategy games. For me it's not a good strategy game and the story and it's cast is boring and cliche. Which is a shame since a few side missions (Squad stories) does have some decent writing that never gets enough time or focus. Combat is as it was in VC1. Offers you options, but you will for the most not care about half of them. What is even worse is that you can still break the game with ease by grinding. Which is boring as hell since the games NPCs is so limited in what they can do.I would not recommend this game to be honest. But if you know what you are going into, go ahead. I just hope you will find more fun in this game than I did.

One of my favourite games of 2018
I never heard or played the previous Valkyria Chronicles beforehand, the only reason I picked it up because it seemed like Xcom and I fancied a game like that. What I got was one of the best experiances this year. I share played this game with a friend and it was fantastic. The game relies on you being smart with not only your movements and your actions; but your team. You see; everyone you control in this game has their own perks and likes. One character can have a set of perks which benefit him to the situration but then flip when he realizes he is next to someone he hates. BUT you can change that; as everyone who isn't a main character has their own unique story which changes their perks from bad to good or better to AMAZING.The story is also amazing, as it has it's moments of seriousness to downright funny - making you forget this is anime WW2. The characters themselves are greatly written, myself enjoying not only the side squad members more than the actual main characters - and the supposed bad guys! Mainly one tho. You'll know whom, soulmate. The downside is the game can feel grindey and the DLC in my opinion is very lackluster in my opinion. But by god; it was an amazing experiance - I invested over 95 hours in this game, getting the Plainum trophy, and I wish there was more - I love the game and I hate that I now completed. If you're looking for a game which offers strategy, comedy, hard-hitting moments - why not?

If you liked the first, you will probably like this
Game has gone back to its roots. The story is told via alot of cuteness so it can be slow to slog through it, not such an issue if you enjoy the story. The gameplay is back to that fantastic semi turn based tactical RPG. Love it!
