Q: what diameter is the plastic dome cover?

The bottom dish is 8" diameter and the clear dome lid is 11 3/4" diameter, over hanging the bottom dish by almost 2 inches all around. If you are in high rain areas this is an excellent feature!

Q: Does this feeder have drain holes

Yes, has drain holes. Love this feeder. Even woodpeckers can get food. If you have squirrels, glue all screw-in areas with E-6000 or stronger. Squirrels will go crazy trying to get in it.

Q: Is thus good for the smaller birds?

Yes, we purchased for bluebirds. Finches and other small birds like it too. You do have to lower the lid to keep larger birds out.

Q: Has anyone used this for live meal worms? Wondering if its difficult for them to crawl out

The edges are really smooth, and shallow. If you’re hanging it is not stable. I own two of these and when the birds are on it the feeder tilts. So as for meal worms yes I would imagine they can crawl right out
